Can you believe Thanksgiving Break is already here?  The Fall semester is flying by.  You are a wonderful group of students and I appreciate the effort you put into and the quality of your work.

Keep up the good work as we head into the frenzy of the holiday season.  There are only 3 weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Break.  Don’t let the chaos get to you.  Here is a quick peek at what is to come!

8th Grade:

As soon as we return, we will quickly review the theme of Expansionism and apply it to World War I.  We will read a play and do a web-quest about trench warfare.  Tuesday, December 16 is our History Final Exam. I will give you a review sheet the week we return.

7th Grade:

We will do a wrap up of the American Revolution and move into the topic of America as a United Nation and focus on our founding documents.  Tuesday, December 16 is our History Final Exam. I will give you a review sheet the week we return.

Have a wonderful, restful, thankful break!  I really appreciate you!

New Week, New President

Well the week of November 10-14 brings us to a handful of “newness”.  After many long months of debate and discussion and wondering, President Elect Barack Obama is making headway on setting up his administration.  Sarah Palin is contemplating her political future and John McCain is taking some time off to regroup for his future.

Here at St. Luke’s we have new units for both 7th and 8th grade.  7th grade moves from the causes of the American Revolution into a look at the actual battles and a special look at the Declaration of Independence.  8th grade is examining Yellow Journalism and the impact of the Spanish-American War on American Foreign Policy heading into the 20th century.

Tomorrow, the 8th graders will do good deeds by assisting Special Olympians at Bandera Bowl.  We will leave as soon as school lets out and get back about 1:30.  Be sure to bring some cash to buy lunch at the bowling alley.  See you then!

Let me know how the first basketball game against SMH went.  Go Tigers!

History takes a back seat

Filed under 7th Grade, 8th Grade

As you all know, the Presidential election is only 5 days away and the last few days we have been having some discussions about each candidate’s position on several key issues.  I am so impressed by everyone’s interest and knowledge about the election and the issues.  We will hold our own class election on Monday.   8th graders, the worksheet you have been working on will serve as your voter registration cards. 7th graders, you will get to vote based on our discussions in class. I want to make sure you all have done research and vote based on facts not just emotion.

It has also been very entertaining to watch you all try to guess who I’m going to vote for.  I assure you I have been doing my own research and feel like I am making a good choice.  I’ll keep it to myself, though :)

8th Grade Up Coming Events November 3-7:

Monday:  Yellow Journalism….Bring a tabloid newspaper to class for discussion

Tuesday:  Election Day…Four Voices/Two Points of View of the Spanish-American War

Wednesday:  Election Returns Discussion

Thursday:  Review for Test over Causes of Spanish-American War

Friday: Test

7th Grade Up-Coming Events November 3-7:

Monday: First Shots of the American Revolution  Chapter 5 sec 3

Tuesday:  Election Day….Character Profiles:  George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Adams

Wednesday:  Election Returns Discussion

Thursday:  Review for Test over Causes of the American Revolution

Friday:  Test

Are you ready for a job?

Hello al!

We have begun our study of the impact of rapid Industrialization at the turn of the 20th Century.  Tuesday and Wednesday’s focus is Child Labor with a look at the photography of Lewis Hine.  You will need to be prepared to research CURRENT examples of Child Labor in the world and what is being done about it.

Thursday and Friday we will focus on the Labor movement and significant strikes of the time.  Next Monday we will have a current events day to discuss labor issues in our time.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be a wrap up and review for the test Thursday Oct. 23

Be sure to check the attachment to see if my study guide came through…this my first attempt to attach through the blog!

Parent Conferences

Hello Parents,

It’s that time of year again.  Monday, October 13 is Parent Teacher Conference Day.  If you want to set up a time to meet with us, please call Margay at 826-0664 to choose your time.  8th grade parents will be meeting with Mr. Kremer and myself while the th grade parents meet with Dr. B and Mrs. Grimes.

If you feel confident that your student is doing well and you are happy with the grades, there is no pressing need for you to make an appointment.  Of course, we always like to hear from you and visit with you about any matters.

See you on the 13th!
