8th Grade Research Paper

Filed under 8th Grade, Parent Info

I am so glad that everyone is SUPER EXCITED about the World War II research papers.  I handed out the official requirements and deadlines to everyone today and they are listed below.  Each day we will have time to discuss a feature of the paper and the writing process.  Be sure to stay on top of this.   The final due date is Wednesday, April 15.

World War II Research Paper

Your task is to write a 4-5 page research paper on the a
World War II topic of your choice.

You will do research at the school library, the public library and, possibly a university library as well as the internet.  You must use a variety of sources to ensure corroboration of facts and diversity of information.

The Resources:

You must use at least 10 different sources for your resources.
•    4 reputable internet sites (university sites, museums, government sites)
•    3 journal articles (these may be found using data bases on the internet, but are publications i.e. magazines or journals)
•    3 book sources

Each of these resources must have facts and information represented in the paper and documented properly.

The Writing:

Your paper must have a clearly stated thesis in the introduction of the paper.  This thesis statement should inform the reader (me) of the purpose for the paper and all information in the paper must relate to that thesis.

You must demonstrate that you have done planning and prewriting as you go through this process.  Attached are important dates to guide you through the paper.

The paper must be clearly written IN YOUR OWN WORDS.  Any ideas, statements of opinion or fact that are not your own should be documented.  Be careful of cutting and pasting because it is easy to forget where the information came from and to forget to come back to it.

Grammar, spelling and proper sentence structure do count as part of your grade.

The Works Cited Page:

All of your information must be documented (cited) with in your paper using In-Text citations.  We will use the MLA style of citing information and creating a bibliography.

Important Dates:

March 31:  A list of at least 5 sources and each type of source represented

April 2:  A preliminary outline or plan for the paper with a thesis statement.  Have at least 4 main sub-topics to write about

April 7:  A full introduction written and ready for peer editing and the full 10 source list

April 10:  A rough draft ready for peer editing and teacher conferences

April 15:  Final Product Due!!

Parent Conferences

Hello Parents,

It’s that time of year again.  Monday, October 13 is Parent Teacher Conference Day.  If you want to set up a time to meet with us, please call Margay at 826-0664 to choose your time.  8th grade parents will be meeting with Mr. Kremer and myself while the th grade parents meet with Dr. B and Mrs. Grimes.

If you feel confident that your student is doing well and you are happy with the grades, there is no pressing need for you to make an appointment.  Of course, we always like to hear from you and visit with you about any matters.

See you on the 13th!

Are you impressed?

Hello Parents!

I hope you are checking in with this new blog format.  I am really enjoying the interactive aspect with the students’ immediate feedback and it is so much easier for me to update and use.  I am loving it already.

I want you to subscribe so you get all the latest information as your kids get it and I welcome your comments as well.  I have been so pleased with this comments thus far and I think you should be very proud of your students!

We had a great first week and have set the tone for a great year.

A few bits of housekeeping

***I added a widget that allows you to subscribe via email.  Let me know how it works***

I have been getting questions regarding the subscribe option.  All you need to do is click the subscribe button at the top right of the page and choose the “bookmark” option for Macs and the “subscribe to feed” option for PC’s.  It will automatically update you when there any new posts to the blog.  If you have any trouble getting updates, check with your internet sevice provider to consider adjusting security settings.

Budding Politicians

I am very impressed with the discussions we have had regarding the Democratic National Convention. It is obvious that you are paying attention to what is going on and are taking an interest in the issues being discussed.  The Republican National Convention is held next week so be prepared to watch and discuss the goings on there as well.

I really want you to plan to watch Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night and send me a comment with your impressions of it.  This is required and you will get a “comment” grade for it.  If you have a conflict and will not be able to watch the speech, please let me know AHEAD OF TIME!!!

**Parents I welcome your comments as well**

I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
