WHEW!! We all made it through the first 9 weeks of school. It was chock full of fun, stress and a little chaos thrown in, but you all did well and I look forward to more adventures in the next few weeks. Keep up with your studies and ask lots of questions and keep learning!

Well, the 8th graders are off to Marble Falls for a glorious 3 days of fun, team building, and one night under the stars! I hope it proves to be one of the most memorable experiences of your St. Luke’s career.
As for you 7th graders being left behind, be good! I know you will…I just have to put it on record. Here are your assignments for while I’m gone:
Wednesday: Read and do questions for Chapter 4 sec
Thursday: Read and do questions for Chapter 4 sec 2
Friday: Work in your Groups on the Colonial Life Project
Be sure to finish your foldable of the 13 colonies and Chapter 3 sec 4 questions. Everything is due on Friday! Have a blast and don’t miss me too much.

WOW!!! If you pay attention to the news this afternoon, you will hear about John McCain’s selection for Vice-President. He has chosen Gov. Sarah Palin from Alaska. She was not widely considered to be the front runner, but was on the short list. It is a bold choice and one that really puts a kink into the Obama/Biden surge from this week. Gov. Palin is not the first woman to run for Vice-President. Leave a comment with the answer for who was the 1st woman to run for VP. I will leave the comments private so you all need to find out. The first one to comment will get a special prize Tuesday morning!
On Tuesday, be ready to talk about the implications of this choice. This just made the race for the White House a whole lot more interesting. Jonathan spoke today of your generation being not only an emerging generation, but a transformational generation. This election sets the stage for you to launch into a whole new world. Either way, after this election, we will have the first African-American or the first woman in the most powerful house in America!
Have a great weekend!

I am very impressed with the discussions we have had regarding the Democratic National Convention. It is obvious that you are paying attention to what is going on and are taking an interest in the issues being discussed. The Republican National Convention is held next week so be prepared to watch and discuss the goings on there as well.
I really want you to plan to watch Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night and send me a comment with your impressions of it. This is required and you will get a “comment” grade for it. If you have a conflict and will not be able to watch the speech, please let me know AHEAD OF TIME!!!
**Parents I welcome your comments as well**
I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Welcome back to St. Luke’s! I am very excited about the possibilities for this 2008-2009 school year.
Because this is an election year, we will be talking a great deal about politics and the candidates running for office. I encourage you to follow the election and discuss the issues as a family. This will help your student develop into a critical thinker and to develop his or her own ideas about important issues in our government.
I love teaching history and my goal for all students is to have each one leave my class with a solid foundation of historical knowledge so that they become well informed, thoughtful and insightful members of the world in which they live.
Your children are living history and I look forward watching them discover their place in it.
Have a wonderful year!
