Another Historic Moment

Posted at 3:33 pm under 7th Grade, 8th Grade, General Info

WOW!!!  If you pay attention to the news this afternoon, you will hear about John McCain’s selection for Vice-President.  He has chosen Gov. Sarah Palin from Alaska.  She was not widely considered to be the front runner, but was on the short list.  It is a bold choice and one that really puts a kink into the Obama/Biden surge from this week.  Gov. Palin is not the first woman to run for Vice-President.  Leave a comment with the answer for who was the 1st woman to run for VP.  I will leave the comments private so you all need to find out.  The first one to comment will get a special prize Tuesday morning!

On Tuesday, be ready to talk about the implications of this choice.  This just made the race for the White House a whole lot more interesting.  Jonathan spoke today of your generation being not only an emerging generation, but a transformational generation.  This election sets the stage for you to launch into a whole new world.  Either way, after this election, we will have the first African-American or the first woman in the most powerful house in America!

Have a great weekend!

    Hey G-
I think that it is a good thing for McCain to choose Sarah Palin. I think that many people wanted a woman in the white house and I think that Hillary supporters who did not pledge to Obama will be happy to see the woman on the roster.
Have a fun three day weekend.

    Hey G-

I also thought it was great to pick Sarah Palin! She seems very smart and well put together. I think McCain did a job well done on his choice. Also, it changes thing up and “change” is never a bad thing. Have a great weekend!

i thought that it was really interesting how Obama touched base on so many things. Like how he made well-placed remarks about what he disagrees with about McCain’s ideas, but he balanced his remarks with complements about McCain.

I think it is very interesting McCain picked a woman as his running mate, it sort of shakes things up. Now, unless something unexpected happens, it is pretty much either way, history is made. If McCain wins first woman vice president, but if Obama wins, first african american president. It feels weird being in the presence of history that could change our future.

    HI,
the first woman to run for vice president was Geraldine Ferraro. i think that the Obama speech was really good. It had a good message of who we need to be as a country and how he would get us there. Many people say that it was great but it kinda want on for too long.

    Dear G,

I think McCain’s choice was very interesting. I think that Palin will do well. However, her nickname is “The Barracuda,” which is just a tad ominous….

since obama is raising taxes isnt that going to just take more money from the working class??

    G,
i think that mccain picking a woman as vp is going to help him win over some voters because she believes largely in womans rights.

Hey G the first woman to run for vice president was Geraldine Anne Ferraro. Also i think that Mcain’s choice of picking Sarah Palin was one of those choices that will either make or break you. I think it will be interesting to see what Hillary’s supporters do now with another woman in the running for power in the white house.

    thanks,
    Drew

I think its awesome that McCain picked a woman… we need some change! but also he could have picked some one with a bit more experience too. i heard she was like mayor of this tiny town in alaska or something! but i still think it’s cool…being in history and all or whatever

  20.   Natalieon 01 Sep 2008 at 6:57 pm 20

    G,
Did you all hear that Sarah Palins 17 year olddaaughter Bristol is pregnant. What kind of parenting is that!?! I dont know much about Palins but I think that McCain only chose her to get Hilary Clintons suporters. And what kind of mom would leave her mentaly retarted child that was just born this year to go be VP?? I think that McCain chose her because he could fight back that he would make history too on the form that she would be the first woman VP as aposed to the first black president. Ya get what im sayin??

The first woman to run for Vice President was Geraldine Ferraro. McCain’s vice is pretty good, though I wish he’d chosen Huckabee. Go McCain!!!!

  22.   abbyon 02 Sep 2008 at 3:14 pm 22

I don’t think hillary supporters will go for McCain just because his vice president is a woman because she doesn’t have enough experience and McCain criticized Obama for not having enough experience.

  23.   CRAZY CLAIREon 02 Sep 2008 at 7:22 pm 23

wow g I really love this convention the only that really bugs me about McCain picking Pailin is that her 17 year old daughter is PREGNANT!!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THat really dosn’t impress me on the parents part….. but other than that- GO McCain!!!!!

  24.   Susannahon 02 Sep 2008 at 7:58 pm 24

    G-

Just couldn’t resist saying something about it… I’m awed!

Wow, I just watched the Republican National Convention and those speeches were AMAZING! George Bush was excellent (never thought I’d hear myself say that), and his wife was, too! I loved how she used Obama’s motto – Change you can believe in – and applied it to McCain.

Hearing about McCain’s years as a prisoner of war definitely changed my views about him! I didn’t know that much about him before, but now I think that he would make an excellent President of the United States! Go McCain!

The story about Nikki and Bridget was especially amazing. It was very intriguing and it really warmed me to Cindy. I think that both she and her husband would be excellent people to have in the White House. They’re very compassionate and kind and I know that they really care what happens to the people of this country. Also, John really knows firsthand what it’s like to be in the army. It seems to me that he has great character values – for the sake of his honor and his country, he endured five and a half more years of torture when he could just have gone home – and that he’s a wonderful person. I’d be proud to have him as the president.

His story as a prisoner of war amazed me. He was aloud to go home but he didn’t. His spirit was never broken, though he was tortured horribly. His character, determination, and strong mind held him together, somehow, and that is exactly what I think we need for our president!

Well, that’s all I have to say!
    Susannah

  25.   Natalieon 03 Sep 2008 at 6:58 pm 25

    Suzy,
I honor the fact thet McCain had all of those years in prison and thats really cool, but the only thing that that prooves is that he is very patriotic, it does not mean that he will be a good president. I think that he needs to focus more on his ideas than his time at war. Not that I like his ideas.
    Well gotta go,
    Queen of planet dork!! :-)

I just watched Sarah Palin on the RNC, and that made me mad. I’m not sure why, but I actually had to turn off the TV early. I don’t mean to sound bad, but I’m still REALLY for BARROCK OBAMA.

  27.   Susannahon 04 Sep 2008 at 4:25 am 27

Well, I’m for McCain because I like his ideas, not his patriotism… his patriotism wowed me, but that’s not why I support him.

Last night I watched Sarah Palin’s speech at the Republican National Convention, and she was great! She was a fabulous speaker, and I loved her comment about how the only difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull was lipstick… Hope, I understand why you couldn’t watch the whole thing. She was extremely… offensive. She talked more about what the democrats were doing wrong than what she would do as Vice President. I still loved her speech, though!

    Go McCain!

Well, I watched John McCain, and I missed the first part because I was out (I had to tag along with my mom). But I think I got most of it. John McCain talks about how to approach this war and how he wants to help the army as much as he can. He definitely wants to make America stronger. John McCain also wants to build offshore drilling and more nuclear power plants. As his followers say, “Drill, baby, drill!”. I’m sure he talked about more things, but I just wasn’t able to watch the whole speech. I’ll try and see if they have it on Youtube tomorrow.

  32.   Hopie-Wan Kanobieon 04 Sep 2008 at 8:50 pm 32

    Queen if planet doek :-)

  34.   Susannahon 07 Sep 2008 at 2:31 pm 34

I’m sorry, Jacob, but I really don’t approve of the protestors. None of the Republicans actually went INSIDE the DNC and protested – I really think they should just have stayed outside with everyone else…

  35.   Enriqueon 07 Sep 2008 at 8:35 pm 35

    Hi “G”,
The first female Vice President was Geraldine Anne Ferraro. I think that it was ok for McCain to pick a young female politician for change, but I don’t think that she is experienced or ready enough to be in charge to of some of the decisions of the world’s most powerful country.

  36.   Susannahon 08 Sep 2008 at 5:29 am 36

I was watching the news this morning and I heard that George hosted the final game of a Little League season… at the WHITE HOUSE. That’s a memory those kids will never forget!
