Budding Politicians
I am very impressed with the discussions we have had regarding the Democratic National Convention. It is obvious that you are paying attention to what is going on and are taking an interest in the issues being discussed. The Republican National Convention is held next week so be prepared to watch and discuss the goings on there as well.
I really want you to plan to watch Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night and send me a comment with your impressions of it. This is required and you will get a “comment” grade for it. If you have a conflict and will not be able to watch the speech, please let me know AHEAD OF TIME!!!
**Parents I welcome your comments as well**
I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Hello Holly – for what it is worth, I have attended four Democratic Conventions (yes, some of us at SLES are Dem’s). Three time as a staff member and once as a delegate. I also worked at the DNC in Washington, D.C. during President Carter’s term.
If there are questions, comments or other general information, I would be happy to help. Attending a national convention can be quite exciting and – hard work. Whether Dem or Republican, I think it is great the students have the opportunity to watch and learn a bit in this election year.

hey g. instead of posting my convention things can i jjust write it on paper and turn it in tomorrow??????
Hey G!!!
I am watching Obama right now and his speech is taking forever! I think his speech is okay but I have heard it from him before. The crowd seems to like it though. I think some of his idea’s are good but I don’t think that they will work. He said we need to stop relying on the middle east for oil, but I thought that most of our oil comes from Canada. ¿¿¿ I am confused. See you tomorrow… his speech is still going and I can’t go anymore.
Lucy
Hi G! I just wanted to tell you that my coment on Obama’s exceptance speach on the ‘Hello world!’ page. So check it out!

Dear G,
I went to the barbeque and I didn’t get home in time to watch the entire Obama speech. However, I did record it using TiVo. I will watch it tomorrow and leave my comment then!
Thanks!

WE NEED A CHANGE! GO OBAMA!
That was a really good speech! I really loved it. Amazing… Barack Obama (in my opinion) has good ideas about the environment, the economy, the health care, and most of all, change. I was actually touched by his speech about his mother and the rest of his family. I LOVED THE SPEECH!! It really was awesome. WE CAN DO IT!
BARACK OBAMA
I did watch the convention and there were some things I liked and others I didn’t like. I did like how Obama told the history of his family and went more into depth about where he came from and how he grew up. I did like when he mentioned there would be 5 million new job opportunities because there are many people currently without jobs. One thing I did not like was he made so many promises. That worries me a little if his actions will be louder than words, or if he is all talk. One remark that really stood out to me though, was the comment that the soldiers fighting in Iraq don’t care whether they are Democrats or Republicans. The soldiers stand by eachother and they don’t serve under a red America, or blue America, but under the United States of America. Overall I did enjoy the speech.
Lauren
oops! Left my political blog on Hello World not here. You can read it there.
HAHA!!! The daily show is making really funny jokes about Obama. I really like Obama, they are being really funny!!!
GOOD MORNING! I watched O’Bama’s speech last night and it was very long (probably extended by the 15 minute clapping and “thank yous”). I learned a lot about O’Bama and how he wasn’t always talking about being president one day. It also talked about his ideas and how McCain didn’t see the problems of average Americans. It sounds like O’Bama will do wonders for this country, not just by ending another Bush term. John McCain was said to have agreed with Bush 90% of the time and that won’t help bring our troops back from Iraq, but O’Bama will. By: Matt M.
G!!!!
I watched the Barrack Obama talk on the convention. He spoke about how he thought McCain doesn’t understand the lives of the average americans. He also said he wants everybody to have free health care. He mostly just talked about what he would make of this country if he were to be elected president. Yep thats pretty much it!
From,
Embrey of course!
oh ya and he also accepted he nomination to be in the running for president!
From,
Embrey
Hey G, cool blog. I watched Obama’s speech last night. He was saying some bad stuff about McCain and about the Republicans. But I guess that’s pretty much his job, right?! He sure is a powerful speaker! But can he really keep all of his promises if elected president? He said so much about cutting taxes but how does he plan to pay for the programs that he’s talking about? So there are definitely some pros and cons to his speech that we need to think about before voting… Anyways, I think that it’s really cool that he really could be the first African-American man to become president! It was very wild with all of the music and fireworks! See you later!
Caroline :p
Hey G!!!!! I think at first in Obama’s speech it took a long time before he finally began to speak because of all the clapping. He just kept saying “Thank You! Thank You! Thank you all!” and it got a little annoying if you ask me. But once he started his speech, it was REALLY GOOD!! Although something that caught my attention was when he said he was going to stop depending on the Middle East for our oil but HOW is he going to do that?! IDK Other things he said that I noticed were “It’s not that John McCain doesn’t care, it’s that he doesn’t understand it.” and “This election is not about me, it’s about you.” Overall I thought Obama did SUPER!!
Before I even watched Obama’s speech I knew he was going to slam John McCain and George W. Bush. And sure enough he did. Told us all about how they both didn’t know what the middle- class was. But even though I knew what basically he was going to talk about, it was still a really good speech.
Hi,
I think Obams speach was rely good. I like how he told alot about his family and how that has changed how he looks at the world so that you got to know him a little better. I also think he made some rely good points and also did a rely good job of getting his points across. He also explained what he was going to do and how he was going to do it if he becomes president. He also adressed many of the things he has been criticised for wich I thought was good. ANy ways thats what I thought.
G,
I watched Obama’s speech last night and i thought it would be realy boring but it wasnt and like i was actually interested in the things that he said…. I think he should be president!!!!!!!!
Hey G-
I watched most of the Obama speech last night, although I went to bed a little before the end. I learned about how he grew up in a poor neighborhood without his father. That story allowed me to realize how far he has come to get to where he is today. He also mentioned his beautiful family. Barack made many promises to the people of the U.S., including making America not dependent on foreign oil within ten years and he said he would invest billions of dollars into renewable energy. The people in the audience believed Barack Obama would change America. I didn’t like his partisan comments. Well, that’s all I have to say about it and have a good weekend.
Jake Fox
Hey G,
I thought the convention was ok. I think he is a wonderful speaker that has high exspectations but i just hope he know how to balance and pay for all of it.
Brynn
Hey G-
Barack Obama’s acceptance speech was very powerful to many Democrats. He talked about many changes he says he wants to make like helping the poor, gas prices, taxes, education, health care, and how we cannot give up as a country. To me, I’ve heard a lot of what he said on Thursday over and over again in other speeches he’s said but in different wording. I liked how he told more about his family and his past.- That’s what makes him unique. Over all, I guess it was a good speech, but I thought the fireworks and decorations were more exciting.
Milla
Regarding Obama Speech,
I thought first of all that it was a good speech. He also stated good statistics. Most importantly he said everything that he was going to do as president which I thought was important. Another thing thing was that he tried to respect John Mcain whenever he spoke about him. That to me means a lot. Overall, very good speech.
Brock
Hey G,
On Thursday, I watched Barck Obama’s speech. I think he has many good ideas like better care for veterans and healthcare for everyone, but what has to happen in order for his ideas to become realistic. If we have to pay higher taxes, then I know some people won’t be happy. I think Barak Obama has a talent for speaking, but that doesn’t mean anything. I do believe, however, that he really cares about the American people and will represent the Democrats well. I also liked the fact that he isn’t rude about John McCain.
sup G,
i think that Obama did very good job on his speech. he was very good at covering all of his bases, he was very modivational and seemed to make the peole feeel like they could do anything. who knows i may be for Obama, but we will just have to wait for the repulican convention.
ADIOS
Hey G,
I thought Obama’s speech was long but well presented. The ideas or promises I liked the best were that America would be independent from foreign oil in 10 years, that we would withdraw troops from Iraq and that taxes would be cut for 95% of all American working-class families. I also admired his personal story of his upbringing in which he overcame financial hardships to reach his goals, which now include being a Presidential candidate. Finally, I liked his ideals of living the American Dream.
Thanks,
Drew
I thought that Baroc obama will do the rite thing for our country and is the best choice for us. I think he will get this country out of the whole we are in
Hey G.
I was so intrested by the convention this year. I really enjoyed learning from all the different speakers and what they had to say. I don’t want to give away EVERYTHING that I put in my report. Last night, Barack Obama’s speech didn’t really move me….. I thought it could have been better. It was baisically everything that all the other speakers say but in one REALLY REALLY long speach. I think Obama has some good idea except I don’t know how long it’s going to take him or how we are going to pay for all of it, what it looks like he’s depending on right now is- HIGHER TAXES. (I have WAY more opinions but you’ll just have to wait to read them from my report.)
hey! i just watched the video on you tube and it was great. he was more serious in this speech than his other speechs and i think he was trying to really get the attention of americs so that we would really take him seriously. i liked how he was kind of insulting McCain but not quite there yet. otherwaise it didnt do much for me. it was basically a recap of everything, which is good, but i think he could have done better.
hi
I personally think that the speech was pretty good. I think that it went on for a little too long. He said exactlly what we need to change this country and all of the right thing to do. It was not one of his best speeches, but it was still pretty good.
See yah,
Queen of planet dork,
P.S.
GO OBAMA!!!
Dear G,
When, after eons of clapping, thanks, and chants of “Yes we can,” the speech finally began, I found that I rather liked the speech. Obama is a very interesting candidate. Being a Republican, I don’t support him, but I really am rather doubtful, also, about John McCain.
I really enjoyed hearing Obama’s ideas about tax cuts and healthcare. He is an excellent speaker and, though in the past, he has been ridiculed for inexperience, definitely knows what he’s talking about.
He is extremely charismatic, too – an excellent speaker. What really struck me as amazing was the comments he made about how the soldiers stood together, not serving under a red America or a blue, but under the United States of America.
I liked his speech, overall, but I still wondered how he will get all the money for those tax cuts! Also, I think he commented a little too much about George W. Bush and John McCain, though he has received some criticism for not speaking about them much before.
Anyway, I think that I will wait for the Republican Convention before I make a definitive decision about who I support…
Susannah!
Hey G!
I watched the convention and i thought obama presented his speech very well, Hes a great speech person ,but he was talking about how McCain wasn’t fit to be our president and how George Bush’s presidency was a failure. Why would he say that on National Television? Also what did he mean by just middle class, why not the “upper class” or the poor? Ill ask on monday too.
From,
Augusta:)
oh and what i meant by the middle class and all that was because he said the last thing he should do is raise taxes on the middle class.
Augusta
Hey G. Its Olivia and 11 30. sorry so late. ok well the DNC was bacicly(dont know how to spell that sorry) just obama saying how john mccain is wrong and that bush has been doing bad as our president and that he wants to change it and make it all better… its was a good ending to the week. gotta go. Night.
Hey G-
Sorry this is a little late but I was busy all night! So I think that Obama’s speech was very well put together and talked about all of the advantages we would have if we elected him; like tax cuts for the poor and universal health care. He did an amazing job covering all of the information the other speakers had talked about all week, however I am still not that big of a fan. . . Anyway have a good long weekend!
Hanne Strash
hey. sorry i had complications on finding how to do this. well the speech was pretty good. i thought it would be really borring, but it wasnt that bad. He was like talking about how Mccain is like very wrong on things. Its kind of hard to know who is telling the truth, but its very interesting how he thinks bush did like every thing wrong. Im going to look on the enternet to learn a little more about it. But its really interesting to hear about everything. Bye.
hey g-
i thought the speech was ok. I thought he repeated everything that he said in other speeches. He put it together really well though. The crowd seemed to really like it. I can’t wait for McCain’s speech!!!
see you tomorrow!!
-maddie
Hey G, I think you got my mom’s email, if not, the reason I’m so late is because I’ve been gone all weekend…im really sorry, so anyways, yeah. Also I think what I wrote about Obama’s speech was too long, so here’s a (much shorter) summary- (if you want I will show you the long version on tues
)
Obama gave his speech on the last night of the democratic convention, and all in all I think it was a pretty good speech. He talked about the “failed policies of Bush” and how we shouldn’t let the next four years be like the last eight. He also talked about how McCain agreed with Bush 90% of the time. Obama also promised change for Americans, and how he would solve problems like the environment, the economy, education, and social security. He said that changes would cost money, but it would be worth it.
I think it was a good speech… inspiring! But he could have mentioned the Iraq war a bit more (he did mention it some) because it’s a big issue. But it was well worded and it got his point across- I liked it.
oh and i forgot to mention how much i like your webpage its awesome
gotta go!
Hey G,
This is the 3rd time i’ve posted my thing. I did on Friday with Olivia but it hasn’t shown up so i’m writing it again. Sooo, Thursday i watched Obama’s speech and i think he’s a strong speaker, but i’m not sure whether he’ll follow through with what he says. He promised better health care, no more fighting in Iraq, and others. He also talked about his family and background, so people will know what kind of family he was raised in. Also he spoke about cutting taxes for 95% of all working family’ which is good, but not so good because what about those other 5% of family’s that are working hard to earn their money???
Hey G,
Sorry that it took me this long for me to write you a comment, my internet would not work! So, when i watched barack obama’s speech on saturday, I thought it was very powerful, inspiring, and it spoke out to America. I thought it was very interesting how he talked about living in a very poor neighborhood and living a tough life. One of the things I loved was when he said, “That our soldiers are not living under Red America or Blue America, but The United States of America.” He also talked about how he is going to cut the taxes for 95%. I think he is a very smart person, but he is not experienced and he does not have very good ideas considering healthcare and the War on Terror.
Sorry again for writing you this late, my computer is a thing that is very bad thingymajig.
Thanks,
Rusty
wow… a LOT of comments!!
Sorry I wrote so late i thought I posted a comment Saturday, but it didn’t show up. I think Obama’s speech was great! He wanted people to know he’s just a normal person who has gone through hard times. I also think his vice president(who’s had a lot of experience) makes up for him not being in the office for a long time.
lol i just read like every comment and now my eyess hurt:/
but im about to watch the democratic convention thing so byee:):):):)
Hey G
Sry this is late but i still hope to get some credit for this.
I really thought about Obama’s speach and i liked how he was going to make 5,000,000 more jobs for people on the street, i thought that was nice. And i also like how he is ensuring healthcare for every American. I just liked it overall. I also liked how he had a hard begining, he worked hard, and is now running for president of the US.
-konnie k
Hey G
Sorry it took me so long I was out of town. I thought Obama’s speech was good, but I dont know if he will keep all his promises. He is a great speaker and either one of the candidates would do a great job.
Paige
Hey g
Sarah Palin is dominating her speech, and everyone at the RNC are loving her. Even though I am still learning about sarah palin, i like her already!
See ya tommorrow
Sorry, I left my comment about Sarah Palin on Another Historic Moment. You can read it there.
Hi G!
I didn’t really like the Palin speach or the McCain speach. They didn’t keep to the facts. And they want the DRILL!?!? We need to stop all together or our adiction will grow strounger! He has been saying lies about Obama’s position. He wan’t a good speaker in my opinion. I saw an article written by a journalist about the FACTS and what McCain and Palin said. I will bring the article tomorow to show you… well I guess thats it. See you tomorrow!
Hey G,
The website is looking cool, and I just wanted to say that I posted what I thought of Obama’s speech on the HELLO WORLD comment area last thursday. Have a good weekend!
-enrique
Yippy!! For McCain.
